What is Tooth wear?
Tooth wear is the loss of tooth structure, namely the enamel and dentine, due to either:
- Acid erosion – requires intervention
- Grinding – requires intervention
- General wear and tear – does not always require intervention
How does acid erosion cause tooth wear?
Acid erosion can occur due to intrinsic or extrinsic factors
Intrinsic Factors
Intrinsic factors often involve some form of acid reflux or vomiting.
Extrinsic Factors
Extrinsic factors include eating high sugary foods, or high citrus containing fruits, or by drinking high sugary fruit juices and soft drinks.
Although it takes time for the effects to be seen, once the enamel and dentine start to wear away, action needs to be taken to stop the progression of the wear. This could mean a change in diet as well as treatment, which could be in the form of filling materials, crowns or veneers.
How does grinding cause tooth wear?
- Grinding is where the top and bottom jaws clench together and rub against each other slowly wearing away the enamel and dentine layers.
- The cause of this can be multi factorial, but common reasons are stress or an issue with the jaw joint causing the chewing muscles to be over worked.
