Hygienist Treatments
Hygienists are specially trained clinicians who help to maintain and treat gum disease and are also there to help maintain the health of your teeth.
Alongside the hygiene treatment (cleaning of the teeth and gums), they also offer:
- Oral hygiene advice
- Dietary advice
- Smoking cessation advice
- Oral cancer screening (as part of the oral hygiene advice)
- Management and maintenance of periodontal (gum) disease
- Air flow polishing including stain removal
What is gum disease?
Gum disease comes in many forms, ranging from mild to severe.
Mild Gum Disease
Mild gum disease, known as gingivitis, is a reversible form which involves inflammation of the gums leading to bleeding, as well as possible hardened plaque (calculus) deposits in and around the teeth. If left untreated, it could lead to a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis
Severe Gum Disease
Severe gum disease, known as periodontitis, is a form of gum disease that involves inflammation of the gums leading to bleeding, as well as possible hardened plaque (calculus) deposits in and around the teeth as well as bone loss around the teeth. If this occurs, it is possible to stop the bleeding through good oral hygiene, however, the bone loss is permanent and cannot be reversed.
Air Flow Polishing
- Air flow polishing, or just air flow as it is often referred to, is an easy and atraumatic way of removing stains from the teeth that can be caused by smoking, drinking teas/coffees/red wines etc.
- It is a machine that utilises a combination of water, air and fine powder particles to fight away any superficial stains that are on the teeth, without damaging the teeth or gums.
- Air flow polishing can access those hard to reach areas that the traditional scaling is unable to.

How often should we visit the hygienist?
- Seeing the hygienist every 3 to 6 months can help you maintain the health of your teeth and gums. Our hygienists can be seen on a direct access basis, meaning that you do not need to see the dentist before you see the hygienist. However, if the hygienist feels that there is a treatment required that is outside of their scope of practice, then they will refer you to the dentist for further investigation.
