Root Canal Treatment
A Root Canal Treatment (or Endodontic treatment) may be required when diseases of the nerves of the tooth (the dental pulp) cause an infection of the tooth.
The tooth has multiple layers:
- Dental Pulp: This is the most inner layer of the tooth that houses the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues. The pulp has many functions, including providing nourishment for the tooth, and to help during tooth development. The pulp is surrounded by…
- Dentine: This is the middle layer which protects the pulp. The dentine layer is then protected by…
- Enamel: This is the outer hard layer of the tooth which protects the whole tooth.

Why would a tooth require root treatment?
- Pulp Infection: Root treatment becomes necessary in cases where the pulp becomes inflamed and infected
- Reasons of Pulp Infection: Common reasons for the pulp to become infected include dental decay, cracked teeth or broken teeth.
- Re-treatment: When a tooth that has an existing root treatment has become infected, a re-treatment may be required.
signs and symptoms for indicating root treatment
Swelling
Tenderness of the tooth when biting
Discolouration of a tooth without any pain or swelling
Prolonged exaggerated sensitivity to hot or cold
How is a root treatment completed?
- The Endodontist (or Dentist with a special interest in Endodontics) will first numb up the area with local anaesthetic.
- They will then proceed to access the nerves of the tooth, clean away debris and infection from the root canal system, and disinfect the whole system.
- The root system is then sealed with a root filler and then the tooth is sealed with a filling on top.
- The treating dentist will then advise for additional protection of the tooth, often in the form of a crown, to reduce the risk of re-infection and to protect the tooth from fracture.
